Progress report on neutrinoless double beta decay detection by bolometer

  • Neutrinoless double beta decay can only take place if the neutrino is a massive Majorana particle. If found to exist, this reaction violates the lepton number conservation of the standard model and detects the effective Majorana neutrino mass. In this paper, we studied the latest experimental progress on neutrinoless double beta decay detection, particularly focus on Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) experiment at Gran Sasso National Laboratories in Italy. System composition and working principles of bolometer, crucial technological challenges are studied and discussed mainly including how to build the cryogenic environment and detector tower, select crystals’ nuclides, discriminate background and design preamplifier for weak signal detection.
